Are HRT Risks the Same for All Women?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) had been used by millions of women to combat the symptoms of menopause, especially hot flashes, until studies revealed a correlation between the combination therapy of estrogen plus progestin and a higher risk for heart attack, stroke, and breast cancer. A new study that tracked the records of approximately 16,000 postmenopausal women of Chinese descent did not find the same risk for heart attacks or strokes that the earlier studies did. But the risk of breast cancer remained among the cohort of Chinese women who took the combination therapy. Researchers note that there could be explanations for this that are particular to the study population, such as body size, diet, and exercise, and results may not carry over to Chinese-American women. ♀
