A Recipe for Valentine’s Day – Every Day

While Valentine's Day is a commercial holiday that moves a lot of greeting cards, flowers, chocolates, and dinner reservations, HFN would like to suggest two things for you to think about. One is getting in a Valentine's Day kind of mood more than once a year with your partner. The other, and maybe an even more important focus, is caring for yourself.

HFN 076 ValentinesDay 1 F2242049During menopause, a time in your life that might challenge your very identity as a sexual woman, it's more important than ever to pay attention to your mojo. The online Urban Dictionary defines mojo as sex appeal or talent; self-confidence, self-assuredness. A belief in yourself.

This can be a challenge when you're experiencing hot flashes, fatigue, depression, weight gain, mood swings, or any number of menopausal symptoms. But this is not a time to let go of all the wonderful things that make you who you are and what you've accomplished. It's not a time to let your diet go to hell or to stop getting exercise or to suddenly wear baggy clothing around the house and think you'll be just as attractive to your mate as ever.

You've come this far, maybe have a great marriage, maybe raised some darn good kids, maybe have a job you like getting up for in the morning. Maybe you're single and love your life and your friends. Whatever the circumstances, a tough menopause can stop us dead in our tracks and turn us into shrews.

But, nope, not gonna let that happen. Not if you're part of our HotFlash Network!

Working It
One thing you can let go of is fear of getting pregnant (if you've gone a year without a period). So, ladies, it's time to drag out that sexy teddie from the back of your drawer, or go buy a new nightie that flaunts what you've got. It's not just for "special occasions" (that might equal two or three times a year: two birthdays and an anniversary?). How about surprising your mate often, with candles, a request for a shower or bath for two, some great smelling massage oil, and maybe a split of champagne. Just because.

If a significant other is not in your life at the moment, use the time of menopause to start something new—a new travel adventure, a new class, a new club, a new volunteer opportunity. The more you can do for yourself in this way, the easier it might be to take your mind off your symptoms. And treat yourself to bubble baths for a luxurious relaxing evening. Just make sure the water isn't too hot (rule number one: don't trigger your own hot flash!).

To-Do's
The recipe for getting through menopause successfully is, first, get your more serious symptoms treated (see our section on When to Call a Professional) and educate yourself about how your body is changing. Then, maximize your talents, be diligent about your diet and health, nurture your primary relationships and your social circle, and have fun!

This might be a bit complicated whenever you're going through hot flashes, weakness, depressive disorders, weight gain, mood swings, or several menopausal symptoms. However this is not a time to rid yourself of almost all the fabulous stuffs that cause you to what you are and exactly what you've finished. It's not a moment to just let your diet come to hell or to prevent obtaining exercise or even suddenly wear baggy clothing about the house and consider you'll be just like attractive to your partner as ever.
